A Day of fun-filled science workshops & broken records – our 5th Annual g4g Day in Brussels!!

Saturday, November 29th marked the 5th annual greenlight for girls Day, our signature event, at the International School of Brussels - and we’re still on ‘up in the clouds’ thinking what an amazing day it was filled with broken records, fun science workshops and fantastic STEM role models. Greenlight for girls continues to grow exponentially in geography and reach with more than 75 events across 5 continents, engaging 1.200 volunteers worldwide and now reaching more than 10,000 students!  This year’s event brought forth 210 greenlight girls from 39 different schools, 105 volunteers and workshop leaders and 16 different organizations...

Setting an Example: Launching in New York with Trick-or-Treat for Science Day

On October 31st (Yep - Halloween!) New York's science educators & g4g's Project Manager, Andrea Urmston, at Circleville Elementary lead what was an inspiring event for all classrooms to follow. Her words describe it best:

What do you get when you take the following and mix well: 87 eager 5th graders in pajamas, 6 enthusiastic teachers (also in pajamas), 4 transformed classrooms, notebooks and glow sticks, and HALLOWEEN?...

Testimonies from our Interns, Catriona and Charlotte!

Testimonies from our Interns, Catriona and Charlotte!

Over the years, our interns have impressed us & inspired us and continue to do so! This summer, among many, we have had two special young ladies, Catriona and Charlotte. During their time with us, they perfected our "Bath Bombs" experiment and took charge of our Science Libraries project by preparing a diverse batch of science books, with a  special note in each, for shipment to South Africa!  These two have been participating in our workshops during the g4g day in Brussels for three years now! At just 14 & 15 years old, their hope is to become more involved by, for example, becoming volunteers in the next event! Our response: why not become a workshop leader instead! The girls LOVED the idea and we loved having them with us! Read their testimonies below...

"Tricks of the Trade": A word from our Communications Officer

"Tricks of the Trade": A word from our Communications Officer

I once heard that the average person produces 200 times more information nowadays than 25 years ago.

I have to admit I dismissed that idea quite fast because ironically, it was just “yet-another-information” I had to process in a world of constant information bombardment.

But I think I finally grasp it. And more importantly, I think I finally grasp why.

We live in a world where everything is changing; everyone aspires to create, to innovate and do more, better and faster. Yes, this brings renew into my life and keeps me constantly curious, but sometimes there is just too much. Gradually, I end up missing out some of the great things that have been happening because they haven’t been targeted directly to me or because they haven’t been bolded enough to stand out in the ocean of facts!...

Launching in Jordan: "the Sky is the Limit!"

Launching in Jordan: "the Sky is the Limit!"

I’ve been lucky in my current role with Cisco Systems to get to work in the beautiful city of Amman, Jordan, for the past year and a half, and to say that I have fallen in love with the country and its people would be an understatement.  Having the opportunity to work with people there in the technical field, specifically engineering, and seeing both the positive increase in the hiring of females in these engineering roles, while at the same time hearing of ongoing challenges and pushback these women get from family, friends, and colleagues of having taken on a very “male-oriented” educational and career path, inspired me to propose to launch our first-ever Greenlight for Girls Day event not only in Amman, Jordan, but the first-ever in the Middle East region!...

News from our Scholarship Girls in India!

News from our Scholarship Girls in India!

“We love to study!”, says our greenlight girls scholarship recipients when we see them.  In the midst of their studies, we arranged a very special visit on 5th October – a trip to see behind-the-scenes at the Bosch manufacturing plant in Bangalore.  Our scholarship girls were provided a special tour of the plant by Bosch leadership.  The girls were in absolute awe of the opportunity.   Dr. Chandana Bhattacharya, who leads our g4g strategy in India, received a very special note from the girls – not only showing their appreciation but also demonstrating their amazing progress in learning English within a few short months.
